Mohawk College is currently recruiting for our next
Accessibility Counsellor

Reporting to the Director, Accessibility and Testing Services, the successful incumbent will be responsible for supporting students with a variety of disabilities. This includes conducting student intake interviews and implementing reasonable and appropriate accessibility supports within a case management model; determining academic accommodations and working closely with teaching faculty to address the accommodation needs of students as they arise; developing and implementing Accommodation Letters; liaising with College administration, faculty and staff to ensure college policies and practices are consistent with the Ontario Human Rights Code and other relevant legislation; advocating within the College and beyond on a broad range of issues impacting students with disabilities including the promotion of universal design for learning on campus and equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility initiatives; and contributing to a positive, collaborative team environment.

The incumbent must be knowledgeable regarding reasonable and appropriate post-secondary accommodations, compensatory learning skills, adaptive technologies, legislation which determines disability supports at the post-secondary level, universal design for learning, and community resources including school boards, community physicians, psychologists and other professionals.

Responsibilities:
The duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
•Performing the duties for a designated student caseload with various disabilities which may include mental health, medical, physical, Deaf, deafened or hard of hearing, Blind or Low Vision, intellectual and developmental disabilities, ADHD, autism, and learning disabilities.
•Ensuring that the necessary documentation is on file to support the requested accommodations and maintaining confidential records of accommodation requests, actions taken, and the effectiveness of the accommodations and supports.
•Interpreting disability documentation, including psycho-educational assessments, with a focus on understanding the functional impact of a disability.
•Planning, coordinating and developing accessibility supports, interventions and Accommodation Letters for students with a variety of disabilities
•Consulting with teaching faculty and other College stakeholders; serving as an advocate regarding the disability needs of students, and supporting the College in meeting its legal obligations under the OHRC and AODA.
•Providing accessibility counselling, resources, and referrals to support transition to employment for students with disabilities.
•Collaborating, consulting and communicating with Counselling and Accessible Learning Services staff, Academic Schools, other College departments and services and external stakeholders including school boards, agencies etc. to support student accessibility needs.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have:
•Masters level degree in Counselling, Social Work, Disability Studies, Education, Psychology, Occupational Therapy or a related field
•A minimum of 3 years full-time experience in providing support and case management for students with disabilities in a post-secondary setting
•Demonstrated ability in providing assistance to adult learners in areas such as: self-advocacy, compensatory learning skills, time management and organizational skills
•Knowledge of and experience supporting students with a range of disabilities, the provision of services, and disability accommodations at a post-secondary level
•Knowledge of relevant legislation and guidelines governing the provision of services to students with disabilities in Ontario
•Demonstrated ability in crisis intervention
•Ability to assess and analyze psycho-educational assessments
•Demonstrated understanding of the post-secondary environment and the ability to relate well to students, faculty and staff
•Demonstrated commitment to EDI principles, fostering student agency and autonomy, student empowerment and self-determination within an Anti-oppressive practice framework.
•Proven ability to work cooperatively with others, and to work independently
•Demonstrated exceptional interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
•Familiarity with the continuum of adult learning, academic programs and student services offered by Mohawk College is highly desirable
•Knowledge of employment resources and supports for students with disabilities
•Qualification and experience as a Sign Language Interpreter (ASL) is an asset for this position.
•Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity and inclusion with the ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse groups of students, employees and the community.
