Job Description:

Reporting to the Manager of the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) the Apprenticeship Learning Strategist will provide support to a diverse client population that includes students with acquired brain injuries, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder, physical disabilities, visual and hearing impairments, medical disabilities, mild intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities and mental health disabilities.

The Learning Strategist is responsible for conducting needs assessments and developing customized, compensatory learning strategies that enhance academic performance despite disability-related barriers to learning. These strategic approaches will be based on proven psychological theories of learning and information processing deficits. They will also enhance social/cognitive development in the college environment.

The successful candidate will:

Provide learning strategies and CAL overview workshops for Apprenticeship students

Conduct needs assessments and develop/implement compensatory learning strategies programs for students with disabilities that enhance academic performance.

Initiate and lead small group sessions and one-on-one sessions with students.

Support Apprenticeship faculty with professional development opportunities to integrate learning strategies into the curriculum.

Maintain confidential case records, relevant statistical data and required tracking/reporting.

Analyze current practices, research new valid methods and strategies to assist students in their education and self-monitoring.

Build partnerships and alliances with internal departments and the external community.

Contribute to a positive, cooperative team environment.

Required Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in a discipline relevant to pedagogy and diverse learning (Education, Psychology, Disability Studies, Speech and Language Pathology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, etc.)

Minimum two years of employment specific to the issues faced by students with disabilities in a post-secondary environment;

Proven experience in the use of a confidential Case Management System such as Clockwork;

Ability to integrate the use of assistive technology (i.e., use of voice to text and text to voice software, digital recorder, Outlook) and learning strategies;

Experience in developing and conducting group workshops;

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, leadership, customer service and creative thinking skills;

Enthusiastic team player with a demonstrated ability to work both collaboratively and independently and display a high degree of initiative;

Flexibility in the work schedule, including the ability to work some evenings.

Asset:

Experience working with Apprenticeship students in the post-secondary environment
