Job Description:

Under the direction of the Chair, Learning and Teaching Services, and in coordination with the Vice President of Truth, Reconciliation and Indigenization, the incumbent is responsible for developing and implementing programs and initiatives to advance Algonquin’s priority to include Indigenous knowledges and ways of knowing in curricula and teaching practices.

Salary range is $66,555 to $115,378 per annum, established in terms of relevant educational qualifications and experience.

The professional responsibilities include:

The design/revision/updating of courses, including:
  • Organizing and conducting consultations on the integration of indigenous course content and pedagogical practices through individual and group sessions;

    Assisting with and designing Indigenous-focused courses and programs;

    Consulting with program and course administrators and other faculty members, Elders, knowledge keepers, community members, program advisory committees, students, and a variety of potential employers;

    Building and maintaining relationships with Elders, knowledge keepers and community members who can provide background and context to Indigenous knowledge through storytelling, artwork, ceremony, teachings or any other method;

    Defining learning outcomes and evaluations, and validating these outcomes;

    Recommending learning approaches, necessary resources, etc.;

    Supporting faculty in incorporating educational technologies;

    Reviewing and revising curriculum and participating in professional development activities;

    Design appropriate response and learning opportunities of current Indigenous current issues (local, national and global) to assist and support faculty and students, as well as the overall institution.
The provision of academic leadership, including:
  • Developing and delivering faculty workshops and training sessions, as well as facilitating program/curricular consultations;

    Working with faculty members to identify and accompany, as necessary, Elders, knowledge keepers and community representatives in the classroom;

    Maintaining close relationships with the Vice President of Truth, Reconciliation and Indigenization, the Mamidosewin Centre and the Indigenous Education Council;

    Conducting workshops on decolonization for faculty specific to the provision of academic programming;

    Developing online and or experiential/Indigenous learning content and programming as related to Indigenous Knowledge, practices and methodologies;

    Liaising with and providing guidance to faculty on various Indigenous pedagogical approaches and literature/resources;

    Building repository of resources on Indigenous Knowledges, practices and methodologies;

    Participating in other activities that are the mandate of Learning and Teaching Services, particularly in providing service to faculty on course design and development, course delivery, assessment development and teaching and learning strategies;

    Participating in the work of curriculum and other consultative committees, hiring committees and departmental/faculty meetings;

    Liaising with community members, engaging in program, Department, School or Faculty, and College promotion;

    Remaining current in the field of study and maintain awareness of emerging trends and practices related to teaching and learning in higher education modeling the College values – Caring. Learning. Integrity. Respect.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor degree in Education or a related field of study; Masters and/or doctoral degree is considered an asset;

    Minimum five (5) years of teaching experience, or equivalent, preferably in a postsecondary setting;

    Must have successfully completed two or more curriculum projects in postsecondary institutions with Indigenous content;

    Five (5) years of related curriculum experience with preferably two (2) years of experience in Indigenous curriculum development and/or Indigenous pedagogical methodologies preferably in a postsecondary setting;

    Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities;

    Demonstrated experience in developing curriculum and public education materials as well as familiarity with issues pertaining to curriculum;

    Capacity to engage members of diverse identities and skilled in a variety of consultation techniques, protocols and strategies;

    Knowledge of Indigenous languages would be considered an asset;

    Ability to speak at a functional level in an Indigenous language is considered an asset.

    Excellent interpersonal, facilitation, organizational, communication (oral and written), research and team building skills;

    Experience in training, planning, preparing and delivering workshops for faculty in higher education and obtaining feedback;

    Demonstrated ability to create higher education curriculum that centers Indigenous knowledge and reflects Indigenous pedagogies;

    Ability to work independently with minimum supervision;

    Ability to develop and maintain relationships with co-workers and stakeholders;

    Superior ability to exercise judgment, maintain a high degree of professionalism, discretion and confidentiality;

    Strong knowledge of Indigenous values, pedagogies, nations and communities;

    Strong organization, prioritization skills and ability to manage workload;

    Demonstrated knowledge of student success strategies in a postsecondary setting;

    Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the use of educational technologies; experience in the development and delivery of hybrid and online curriculum would be considered an asset;

    Evidence of commitment to the success of all learners.
Algonquin College operates programs on a 12 month basis; faculty may be assigned accordingly.
